I spend my days learning with kids. It is awesome. Kids are curious and questioning and excited to learn and connect and try new things. OK, they also freak out a bit because we’ve taught them that somehow an F on a 6th grade science test will destroy their entire future. I mean, who could deal with that? Not me!!

So we play with words, with literature, with philosophy and physics, with form and music and ideals and alternative histories and we challenge every illogical premise we can get our hands on, and even some of the logical ones, just to test our own faith in the matter. We delve into who we are and why, and who we want to be and how to get there. We connect dots and then mess up the game board to start fresh.

And then the grownups walk into the room and we all have to be quiet and sit still and fill in bubbles and account for all our actions. It’s like the ceiling presses in and the walls trap us in our future cubicle of life the way we’re told it should be, but NOT life the way we learned it could be.

and once we learn that it CAN be otherwise, well, then we just wait until it is our turn to make it happen.

~~~~~Ok, this may be a bit idealistically over the top, but it’s what gets me up in the morning and what keeps me devoted to kids.

I teach middle school kids. I have raised 3 beautiful courageous, talented kids. the youngest leaves for college next fall and for the first time ever in my life I will be alone. I am scared. I am excited. I am incredibly curious about what will happen – what do I want to do next? I might stay where I am. I might take my passion and curiosity somewhere new. Heck, I might even stay up all night and eat all the peanut butter myself. The sky’s the limit (or as my students pointed out, if the sky is the limit, then I am actually limiting myself because there is a vast universe beyond “the sky” – smart-ass kids)

Anyway, I am here to get a taste of other people’s pursuits. I am totally intrigued already.
